As effective as Beta Red is for improving performance, it does have one weak spot: when exposed to moisture, the powder can turn into a solid Beta Red brick!
This happens because the nitrate-rich, freeze-dried beet juice powder we use is high in hydrophilic nitrogenous pigments called betacyanins and betaxanthins. These compounds contain free hydrophilic functional groups that readily form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, causing the powder to absorb moisture from its environment. In simple terms, Beta Red loves H₂O so much that it will even pull water molecules from the air.

How to Store Beta Red at Home
While this property helps Beta Red dissolve quickly when mixed, it’s not ideal for storage—especially in high-humidity environments.
If you live in a humid climate, or store Beta Red near moisture sources such as above a stove or kettle, it’s important to press out as much air as possible and fully reseal the pouch between uses. This can be tricky if powder gets caught in the pouch’s seal. For that reason, I recommend placing the entire Beta Red pouch inside a large, resealable Ziploc bag—ideally the 2-gallon size—for extra protection.
It’s also a good idea to keep Beta Red in a cool location, ideally below 70°F (21°C), to protect nutrients. While room temperature is often fine, cooler is better; avoid the fridge or freezer unless properly vacuum-sealed to prevent condensation.
Traveling with Beta Red
Keeping Beta Red fresh on the road takes a little extra planning. I’ve had great results using a vacuum seal coffee bean storage canister, but for most trips I prefer the simplicity of a large Ziploc bag — it’s lighter, takes up less space, and is easy to find anywhere. Just make sure to press out all the air before sealing.
You can also pre-measure individual servings (1 or 2 scoops) into smaller Ziplock bags for travel. Doing this allows you to take just as much as you need, and the remainder can remain tightly sealed at home. If you’ll be traveling by air, I recommend putting these smaller Ziplock bags into a larger one in case any work their way open. The last thing you want to find upon arrival is Beta Red powder all over your formerly clean clothes.

Does Beta Red expire?
There is a 'best by' date printed on each Beta Red pouch, but when stored properly in a cool, dry location and kept sealed between uses, it will maintain peak potency much longer. Exposure to moisture or heat can degrade the beet juice pigments and amino acids faster, so proper storage matters.
How long does an open pouch of Beta Red last?
With proper storage, an open pouch will stay fresh through the best-by date, and likely much longer. We've tested pouches a couple years past their 'best by' date and they were indistinguishable from recently packed ones. If you live in a very humid climate and notice clumping before this date, it’s a sign moisture has gotten in — tighten up your storage routine going forward.
What if my Beta Red has clumped into a solid brick?
Don’t throw it out — it’s still safe to use. Clumping is caused by moisture absorption, not spoilage. Break it up with a spoon or the back of a fork, then store it in a sealed Ziploc bag going forward to prevent it from happening again. The flavor and performance benefits are unaffected.
Is clumped Beta Red less effective?
No — clumping is a physical change caused by moisture, not a chemical one. The active ingredients (beta-alanine, citrulline malate, betaine, and beet juice nitrates) remain intact. Just break it up and mix as normal.
Can I store Beta Red in the fridge or freezer?
Generally no — unless it’s vacuum-sealed first. Moving a powder from a cold environment to room temperature causes condensation to form inside the pouch, which is exactly the moisture exposure you’re trying to avoid. Room temperature storage in a sealed bag is safer for most climates.
